Everything you need to know about GST, BAS, and record-keeping as an Australian rideshare driver.
Yes — and this is one of the most important things rideshare drivers need to understand. Unlike most sole traders who only need to register for GST once they earn $75,000 per year, rideshare and ride-sourcing drivers must register for GST from their very first dollar earned, regardless of income. This is a requirement under the ATO's ride-sourcing rules. Once registered, you must lodge a Business Activity Statement (BAS) each quarter and remit the GST component of your fares to the ATO.
A Business Activity Statement (BAS) is a form you submit to the ATO to report and pay your GST obligations. As a rideshare driver, you'll typically lodge quarterly. The due dates for each quarter are:
RideLog organises all your entries by quarter automatically so you're always ready before lodgement day.
GST is calculated as 1/11th of the GST-inclusive amount. So if a passenger paid $44 for a fare, $4 of that is GST you owe the ATO. RideLog calculates this automatically on every income entry — you just enter the total amount and we do the maths. On expenses, we calculate how much GST you can claim back based on the business use percentage you set for each category.
As an Australian rideshare driver, you can generally claim deductions for expenses that relate to your driving work. Common claimable expenses include:
Note: Vehicle registration is not subject to GST in Australia, so it cannot be used to reduce your GST liability — though it may still be claimable as an income tax deduction. Always consult a registered tax agent for personalised advice.
RideLog is completely free to use. There are no subscription fees, no hidden charges, and no credit card required to sign up. You can log unlimited income and expense entries, view your GST position, and track multiple financial years — all at no cost. RideLog is supported by advertising to keep it free for drivers.
RideLog is a record-keeping tool, not a tax advisory service. It helps you organise your income and expenses, calculate GST, and generate an income statement — which makes conversations with your accountant much faster and cheaper. We recommend using RideLog alongside a registered tax agent or BAS agent who can review your records and lodge your BAS and tax return on your behalf.
Yes — RideLog is specifically designed for drivers who work across multiple platforms. Uber and DiDi have different income and expense categories, different fee structures, and different line items on their driver statements. RideLog has all of these pre-loaded so you can log each platform's entries accurately without any manual categorisation. Your combined income statement at the end of the year shows a clear breakdown by platform.
Your data is stored securely in Google Firebase, one of the world's most trusted cloud platforms. All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Your financial records are private to your account — no other user can access them. We do not sell your data to any third parties. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time.
Rideshare driving in Australia comes with a unique set of financial obligations that most general-purpose accounting tools simply weren't built for. Unlike employees who receive a payslip with tax already withheld, rideshare drivers are sole traders responsible for their own GST registration, quarterly BAS lodgement, and income tracking across multiple platforms.
RideLog was built to solve that specific problem. It's not a general bookkeeping app trying to serve everyone — it's a focused tool built around the exact income categories and expense types that appear on Uber and DiDi driver statements. Every category, every fee type, and every quarterly lodgement deadline is built in.
The result is an app that takes two minutes to set up and makes tax time significantly less stressful. Log as you go, see your GST position in real time, and hand a clean income statement to your accountant when they ask for it.
RideLog is free to use and always will be for core record-keeping features. We believe every Australian rideshare driver deserves access to proper financial tools regardless of how much they earn.
Free to use. Takes two minutes to set up. No spreadsheets.
